Long Walk Action Plan: November Batch 2
• Strengths - A realistic appraisal of where they are at currently
- Strengths
> already completed second year Bush Environments subject involving a 10 day walk. Which I dehydrated meals for, got physical fit, did a presentation and was marked reasonably well (80/100) on the on-trip aspects we were marked on. This included: preparation (organisation), participation, judgement, navigation, OLATS and experience enrichment.
Oddie said I needed to work on my decision making and observe other leaders, I feel that I definitely have done this in the past year and a half since the 10 day walk.
> been on a Kosciuszko Prac Extension Skiing Trip this July travelling from Guthega Dam to Guthega Power Station. This was via Consett Stephen Pass and the Rolling Grounds.
However, this only a small section of Long Walk. I also may not go near these places or this may not be part of the route my group takes. It will also be different with less snow.
> I’ve already successfully complete two and half years of my EBOEXB – Bachelor of Outdoor Education Extended (Physical Education) degree.
> I have completed two teaching environments this year – Flat Water and Winter Alpine Environments.
> By having almost finished my third year I have just about all the gear I need.
> Feeling pretty comfortable about soloing this trip as I feel it’s great to have some down time and you are carrying all of the gear – which makes you feel really self-sufficient.
> Persistence – my persistence to not give up and fix problems has helped me for my entire life, I can’t see myself wanting to give up on Long Walk.
• Barriers - What is going to stand in your way and how will you overcome it
- Barriers
> Iron deficiency, which I am eating more meat and taking supplements for.
> This will be the longest trip I have ever been on: It’s only 8 days longer than the current longest trip I have been on. I will try to remain positive and appreciate this opportunity, this trip is special.
> I need to work on my navigation, I haven’t had to use it much recently so I am a bit rusty. I am going to do some practice before Long Walk.
> I often don’t clarify things with other people and this causes miscommunication, on long walk I am going to double check things to prevent this. My main mantra and goal is to not just assume something, to clarify it.
> My knees have been getting sore when descending in skiing and hiking down steep slopes. A few of my third years peers said to use walking poles for long walk, as they “save your knees so much”, so I am going to use them.
> Not very experienced with dehydrating, my mum was extremely happy and enjoying doing most of it for my 10 day walk and skiing trips last year. I am going to get her to teach me the ropes this time round. So far it’s working!
> I may procrastinate some of the Long Walk assessments as I do have to complete them alongside all my assessment for my other subjects – I have now six left along with one exam and an 8 day placement that involves preparing lesson plans. Being prioritised with all of this will help me complete everything – I have calendars further down in this action plan that I will look at and use to come on track.
• People and Resources - what people and resources exist that will aid your preparation and planning
- People and Resources
> Mum will help me with my cooking and dehydrating.
> My peers from third year who have already completed long walk and can offer me advice.
- Teagan Ainslie, Malory Huther, John Morris and second year Bree Tivendale just to name a few.
> My first year housemates – Iden, Heath and Maeve: I can discuss ideas with them and we can exchange our opinions. I can also talk to my cousin Oscar Nitz.
> Steve from Rock Hardware always an answer for a question about gear.
> My aunty, Oscar Nitz’ mum, Monica has also done a long walk for 3-4 weeks too.
> I can also ask Munge any questions. Munge is also my leader and I know that trust him and he’s going to be a great leader.
• Assessment Resources – including evidence of initial research into resources for their Research Assignment, websites, books, people, journals etc
